What We’ve Done

Jackson Heights is a vibrant, diverse, and densely populated neighborhood sorely lacking in public open space. Since 2007, the JHGA has worked in collaboration with other community groups, elected officials, and city agencies to address this urgent need for more park space.

The 78th Street Play Street

The 78th Street Play Street is a popular annual street closure that provides increased open space to our park-starved neighborhood. Located right next to Travers Park, the Play Street makes it possible for people to easily spill into the street, allowing them to stroll, play, attend events, and relax, all while reducing overcrowding in the park.

Launched in 2007 as a Sundays-only event in the summer and fall months, the Play Street has expanded its operations each year, achieving a 24/7, three month street closure in the summer of 2011.

The Play Street is an oasis not only to families with young children but to everyone in our community - for people who want to get to know their neighbors and socialize, read a newspaper, participate in a class, attend an event, or just want to people-watch, relax and enjoy the diversity of our community in a public space where everyone feels welcome.

For the 2012 season, the Playstreet is again open 24/7 from June 13th to August 31st. Click here to view our calendar of events.
