Beginning at 6am on Thursday July 1, Jackson Heights will temporarily gain a little more open space as 78th Street will become a temporary Public Plaza 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until August 31.
In other words, 62 days of:
Extra play space when Travers is crowded!
Extra space for the Greenmarket!
Somewhere to ride bikes and scooters!
A shaded “green” seating area! (In the works…)
This exciting pilot project is, hopefully, the first of many improvements to the issue of open space access in Jackson Heights.

On Thursday the 20th of May, Community Board 3 of Queens voted in favor of supporting the 78th street play street initiative. We are making 78th street between 34th avenue and Northern Boulevard a car-free street. This is a pilot project that will last two months and we believe it will be a great success.
We are very grateful to CB3, and all of the other individuals, groups and elected officials who have helped achieve this.

The Jackson Heights Green Alliance, the Jackson Heights Beautification Group, and the Friends of Travers Park have developed a proposal to expand our two-year-old Sunday Play Street program. We are proposing a pilot project to create a car-free 78th Street Play Street (between Northern Blvd and 34th Avenue) every day for the summer months of July and August, 2010.
Community Board 3 will vote on on our pilot project proposal on Thursday, May 20th.
We have the support of many local politicians and community members, as well as a number of city agencies.
But approval of the plan is anything but assured. That is why we need you to let the Community Board know your opinion on whether to expand the Play Street operation to July and August everyday. The meeting is Thursday, May 20:
