Jackson Heights in Queens, NY is extremely crowded and sorely lacking in parkspace, as witnessed by how crowded Travers Park becomes during the warm months.
Jackson Heights Green Alliance, Inc. (JH Green) is a community group dedicated to increasing and improving open spaces in our neighborhood.
Established in 2007, JH Green initially focused on exploring ways to initiate an expansion of Travers Park into a space adjacent to the park currently used by a Toyota car dealership. This is currently one of our priorities.
JH Green also helped bring the 78th St. Play Street to Jackson Heights. Along with other community groups we initiated a project to close down 78th Street alongside Travers Park on Sundays all Summer in order to increase the space available to the community.
This worked so well we repeated it in 2009. In 2010, we applied to run the Play Street for the entire months of July and August. After a lot of work and incredible support from the community and invaluable help from our elected officials, we were granted permission for this to happen!
In the meantime JH Green continues to work with elected officials and neighborhood groups to try and find creative ways to improve Jackson Heights.
